Lipotropic Action of the Extracts of Rosa rugosa Root son the Induced Fatty Liver of Rats

Kim Jeong-Dae
Abstract
This study was performed to elucidate the possible mechanism responsible for lipotropic action of the methanol extracts of Rosa rugosa (ROEX) on the fatty liver induced orotic acid, carbon tetrachloride, puromycin or ethanol treatments. The
feeding
of
ROEX suppressed the accumulation of liver triacylglycerol without influencing in the concentration of serum triacylyglycerol in rats treated with carbon tetrachloride or orotic acid, suggesting that the inhibitory effects of ROEX against the
accumulation of liver triacylglycerol may be not result in the increased output of liver triacylglycerol into the blood. In rats treated with ethanol or puromycin, the beneficial effects of ROEX were not found. Interestingly, the feeding of ROX
decreased the concentration of serum non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) in all experimental model. Considering that the serum NEFA are constantly mobilized from adipose tissue and pass via the blood stream to the liver, it is possibility that the
inhibitory effects of ROEX against the accumulation of liver triacylglycerol may be due to the reduced availability of fatty acids for triacylglycerol synthesis in the liver.
